ROSENTHAL RESIDENCE

STUDIO : MACONDO
YEAR : 2007
STATUS : COMPLETED

PROGRAM : Single family residence of approximately 5,000 sf seeks to emulate a farmhouse in a dense urban street in the north side of Chicago. The design of this residence was conceived not in plan but in spaces with intersecting volumes, thereby creating contiguous spaces linking the foyer, living and dining spaces, kitchen and outdoor deck and on the upper floors, the yoga room with terraces that engage the façade while providing enough privacy. The space planning concepts rendered the family spaces to be south-facing. Stairwell opening acts as an enclosed atrium with a skylight, that when opened, uses stack effect to draw cool air through the house in summer. Large windows ensure adequate daylight within the house.

Picture venting windows ensures continuous cross ventilation. A solar water heater installed on the roof support the hot water needs. The family spaces are heated by energy efficient low-voltage Radiant Floor Heating system. A vertical plane of the façade with huge windows is clad with a composite material used as rain-screen cladding, with the finished surface of 100% natural wood that provides a simple façade with the warmth of a farmhouse, while withstanding the demands of the environment.
